New Zealand’s current mobile market is a duopoly of Vodafone and Telecom Mobile. By late 2005 the market was approaching saturation and mobile subscriber growth is predicted to begin tapering off during 2006 and 2007. Vodafone offers nationwide 3G coverage, unlike Telecom’s service which is limited to major cities and holiday destinations. Despite strong competition between Vodafone and Telecom, the existence of a duopoly has kept mobile call prices very high. By mid 2006 Econet was in the early stages of building its network in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
